| Male (pronounced Maa-Lay) – the capital and largest city of the Republic of Maldives. Male City is located on an island in Kaafu Atoll.The population of Male, Maldives is 104 400 people (2006). Traditionally it was the King’s Island, from where the ancient Maldive Royal dynasties ruled and where the palace was located.  Name of the capital of the Maldives is derived from “Mahaalay”, and that came from Sanskrit (ancient language), which means “Maha” – “big” or “great” and “aalay” – “home”.
The name Maldives came from the Sinhalese word Maala Divaina (“Necklace Islands”), perhaps referring to the shape of the archipelago.  Male island is just 2 km long and 1 km wide, and so there are very few open spaces.Officially, the population of the capital city of about 65,000 people, but with foreign workers, tourists and people from other islands, often coming here in the city is usually 100,000. 
Size of the island has been doubled by implementing projects to restore the land and the surrounding islands are used for different purposes, and on one of the islands of the airport is located. The government plans to develop other islands to reduce the pressure on the island of Male

|  The tsunami in the Maldives
The largest Indian Ocean tsunami happened December 26, 2004 . His cause was an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, a magnitude 9.3 points . Wave height was 20 meters. On the day the tsunami affected Indonesia, Thailand , Sri Lanka , southern India, and its echoes were heard around the world. It is believed that the tsunami killed about 300,000 people. However, the Maldives suffered less likely, although there was declared emergency. This fact may be surprising the public , because the archipelago is located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and a giant wave had to completely absorb the island. However, environmental services have given a logical explanation for this situation. The tsunami in the Maldives was, but it did not cause the same serious damage as in other countries in Southeast Asia.
The Maldives are atolls - islands , surrounded by a dense ring of coral reefs. This natural coastal ecosystem is a reliable protective barrier against tsunamis. If a great wave breaks with incredible force on the coastline of the mainland, it can cause tremendous harm to humans. However, coral reefs, blocking the island , take the main powerful blow wave. Accordingly to the coastline of the island comes a little water compared to places where there is no coral reefs. Experts say that the Maldives in 2004, survived thanks to the dense belt of coral reefs.
The consequences of the tsunami were not badly damaging - slightly affected communication, but the water flow was fast and did not exceed a height of over 1 meter. 19 hotels have suffered losses and were partially destroyed , killing 76 local citizens and tourists from the United Kingdom 3 . Male International Airport , located on the island of Hulhule , partly affected by the tsunami , but two days later reopened . After the tsunami was seen outbreaks or serious shortages of food and water . If you compare the detriment of other countries affected by the tsunami strongest in decades , the Maldives is not so bad escaped . Especially when you consider the geographic position of the ocean.
In Maldives, the earthquake and tsunami had never happened . The zone of high seismic activity is located near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, which is also bordered by the Indian Ocean.
